Two Takes on Holiday Decorating

Updated: Jun 7, 2023

This year, I'm decorating two different homes, which gives me the chance to use two different decorating schemes. As much as I love colorful old-fashioned ornaments and bright lights, there's something comforting about a more neutral palette too.

Scandi

Our mid-century home is the perfect backdrop for a Scandinavian Holiday feel -- complete with a limited palette of white, wood, straw and green.

This year's Trader Joe's shopping bags are too cute to recycle! I cut out the village illustrations along the bottom of the bag and wrapped them around the tree stand, then filled the middle with "snow" batting. That cute tall skinny artificial tree was my mom's, and I love it. And I got most of the Scandinavian straw and wooden ornaments from an estate sale for about $5.

Our built-in shelves are really fun to style all year round, but especially during the holidays. I edited out some of our usual books and decor to make room for holiday.

Here's a closer look at some of the items. Some glass balls and battery-operated fairy lights crammed inside a jar create a fun display. I elevated a variety of candles on my white cake stands.

Colorful

At the other house, I embraced my love of color.

The vintage Christmas village on my teal triangle shelf was my Grandma's, and I'm still growing my collection of vintage Santa mugs.

What's your favorite take on Holiday decor? Do you stick to a theme or mix it all up?
